Hey All. It’s been a while since my last post, sorry about that… again. Our family has been enjoying some much needed summer vacation. It’s nice to not have anything to do, but we (Heather and I) miss having a schedule. A lot of our close friends are in the States right now or are in other parts of China. This leaves us with a lot of free time and no one to spend it with. Also, it is incredibly hot outside which makes it difficult to take the girls anywhere. Enough of me being positive. We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of my mom, which is now down to only 2 ½ weeks.
Not only will it be an amazing time for us to see her, it will also be fun to see China again through the eyes of someone who doesn’t live here. We’re also hoping we’ll get to show off our Chinese a bit. Along those same lines Sydney’s Chinese lately has been getting better and better. It surprises me whenever she says something I didn’t know she knew. She seems to be getting really interested in it these days and is speaking more and more. As we mentioned before Aubrey has been walking, but she now has started climbing up on couches and climbing down from them. Her (Aubrey) speech is also getting better; she will not only say a few words here and there, but also repeat some words we say. Her interview at KFC is next week so I will keep you posted on if she gets the job.

One Year In China! Our Aussie Guest and Duck Innards
Yesterday we celebrated our one year anniversary since moving to China! It was a great day and it marked a huge milestone for us. It is weird for us to look back over this past year and see how fast it’s gone. I think some of our most pleasant surprises have come in how much we love living here and how much Chinese we’ve been able to learn in only one short year. We are truly blessed and thankful to be here and look forward to many more wonderful years.
I really want to take a moment to say thank you to all of you. Living here has made me realize that literally everything we have in our lives is because of someone else. Any skill, talent, opportunity or material thing you own is because either someone taught you or gave you the opportunity to do something. We are all in debt to someone else. Heather and I are no exception; we owe so much to each of you at home who help us. We are deeply grateful to each of you for your influence on our lives. Many of you reading this have shaped who we are and make it possible for us to get to live out here. So from the Peterson’s we want to say “thank you”.
Looking forward there are some changes that will be taking place soon that we’re all really excited to share with you, but are waiting for them to be set in stone (as many things can change quickly). We are excited to continue to grow in our Chinese and our understanding of this beautiful culture. We’ll keep you posted.
Lastly, we had a wonderful guest over the past week. A friend of ours from Australia came to visit us and encourage us and it was great. She came at the perfect time as we have really needed some encouragement lately. She truly blessed us with her wisdom and willingness to listen. Thank you Diana! Unfortunately, Heather was sick a lot of this past week with some stomach issues and her body feeling weak. She ate duck innards at the beginning of the week and she thinks that made her sick (go figure, she ate the insides of a duck). She has been feeling better, but still isn’t 100 percent. Next time Heather just pass on duck innards.
One year and counting,

Aubrey Walks! My Heart Stops! And What's Coming Up.
In the past few days our little Aubrey has been walking so much. It was less than a week ago when Heather and I first saw here taking unassisted steps between couches. We were so surprised! Since then she has each day been getting braver and is now walking like a champ. We even see her standing up from the floor without the help of a wall or couch which to us is amazing! It’s also a relief to see her fall well, what I mean is when she starts to lose her balance she doesn’t fall face/head first into the floor (Sydney did not have that skill). We’re so proud of you Aubrey… now get a job.
I also wanted to write a quick story about how my heart (nearly) stopped. I came home one night from playing basketball and Heather was alone watching T.V. on the couch with the girls in bed. As we were talking I could see that it was dark in our room, but I suddenly saw a shadow move past the doorway. After I regained consciousness (that’s a joke) I asked Heather if someone was in our room to which she replied “no”. I then remembered that Sydney and Aubrey each had 3 foot balloons of cartoon characters given to them. We had put them in our room and with the fan on in the room it made this children’s balloon an instrument of pure terror. In print this isn’t nearly as scary as it was in life. Trust me when I say “the children’s balloon looked like a scary person!”
In the weeks ahead… I (Matt) will be finishing up my second semester next week! It will officially be Heather and I’s first full year of studying Chinese. And my Mom is going to be coming to visit us from August 5th to August 18th! She bought her ticket this week, so I know it’s for real. Now how do I break it to her that she will be staying in a room with roughly 15 chickens (thinking…) I guess she will just find out when she gets here. Till next time.
